The GBP Could Be About to Make a BIG Move

GBP poised for major move as hawkish BOE hikes drive sterling strength.

James LNE 2 min read

James LNE examines why the pound is displaying bullish signals across multiple currency pairs and validates the setup using both technical and fundamental analysis. He explores central bank expectations, inflation data, bank consensus, and COT positioning to build a case for GBP strength, then identifies specific trade opportunities on GBP/USD and EUR/GBP.

The Case for Sterling Strength

The British pound is flashing compelling bullish signals across multiple timeframes and currency pairs, driven by a confluence of hawkish central bank expectations and upside inflation surprises. The Edgefinder technical framework shows bullish readings on GBP/USD, GBP/JPY, GBP/CHF, GBP/NZD, GBP/AUD, and GBP/CAD—a rare synchronized strength that warrants deeper investigation. When one currency shows uniform bullish bias across such a broad basket, institutional positioning and fundamental drivers deserve scrutiny.

The Bank of England's hawkish tilt provides the primary catalyst. Markets are pricing an 80% probability of a 25 basis point rate hike on November 5th, with additional hikes expected through mid-2027. This aggressive repricing reflects upside inflation surprises: UK headline CPI rose to 3.5% in September, beating consensus of 3.4%, while producer price inflation came in at 4.6% versus expectations of 4.3%. Energy prices are forecast to push headline inflation above 4%, forcing the BOE to act despite its earlier reluctance to tighten. The central bank sits at 3.75% after holding steady 35 days prior, but market expectations have shifted materially higher.

Institutional Consensus and Carry Dynamics

Bank research reinforces the bullish pound narrative. Over the past 30 days, major institutions including NatSix, ING, MUFG, SEB, and Westpac have issued 49 bullish calls versus only 23 bearish calls on sterling. ING specifically highlights that sterling is riding on greater market confidence in the BOE tightening cycle and positions GBP as a high-carry European currency. This carry advantage matters: if the BOE raises rates to 4% while the ECB holds at 3%, investors earn superior returns by holding sterling-denominated assets, all else equal. Higher interest rates attract capital inflows and support currency appreciation.

Interestingly, Commitment of Traders data shows net long positioning but recent outflows of 2,000 contracts, creating a potential mismatch between fundamental strength and positioning. This divergence may indicate the market is underpricing sterling's upside, or that large speculators are reducing exposure ahead of the November decision. Open interest has trended higher over time, suggesting growing conviction despite recent positioning pullbacks.

Technical Setup and Trade Opportunities

On the daily timeframe, GBP/USD has traded in a tight range since May of the previous year—over 12 months of consolidation. The pair recently bounced from support after the dollar rally faded, with buyers re-entering the market. Seasonality data favors GBP strength into year-end, particularly if the pound continues outperforming its historical average. The H4 setup offers a tactical entry: traders should await a pullback to the 50% Fibonacci retracement of the recent bullish leg, which aligns with previous resistance highs. A break and retest of this level followed by rejection would confirm continuation higher.

EUR/GBP presents an alternative setup on the daily timeframe, with a beautiful downtrend and rejection off the 200-day moving average. However, this trade awaits a pullback to Fibonacci levels—a pullback that has not yet materialized on this longer timeframe. Patience remains essential for optimal risk-reward entry.
